University hosts school's leaflet competition |
The Students' Union in Scarborough held a competition for Gladstone Road Junior School, and asked the children to design a leaflet for a competition to promote Fairtrade fortnight. There was an amazing response with 480 entries to choose from. Dr Craig Gaskell, Dean of Scarborough Campus, and Vice President Mark Alcorn had the job of picking the winners from the heaps of designs. The two first prize winners, one from year 3-4 and the other year from year 5-6, won a University of Hull Scarborough Campus hoodie along with other goodies, all in a Fairtrade bag. Four runners up also won a bag full of goodies. The Students' Union made a huge collage out of all of the 480 leaflets designed and is donating it to the school as special thanks for their great effort. The six winners, with two Fairtrade members and the Scarborough Evening News, came down to the University where the winners were presented with their prizes. They then went round the University handing out their winning leaflets to students and staff along with free Fairtrade biscuits. This was a great success and the children enjoyed their afternoon at the University. |

Staxton Goes Bananas!
| Going for the world record, visitors at Staxton's Big Brew coffee morning go bananas! Morrison's supermarket generously donated 200 Fairtrade bananas for this and for the 125 pupils at Hertford Vale CE School in the village to join in the Fairtrade Foundation Go Bananans world record attempt. So far 370,000 people are known to have eaten a Fairtrade banana during the attempt! |
