Welcome to the Scarborough Fairtrade Action Group web site

FAIRTRADE SCARBOROUGH ACTION GROUP FAIRTRADE SCARBOROUGH ACTION GROUP was committed to getting the Borough of Scarborough granted Fairtrade status. The Group's task is now to maintain and increase the number of shops, schools, businesses, hotels, churches, catering establishments etc. committed to Fairtrade.

Fairtrade is a way to make sure farmers and other producers in Third World countries get a fair - living - wage for their work. Fairtrade means paying farmers in the South a fair price for the work they do, and a guarantee that the price they are paid will always cover the cost of production – no matter how low the market price goes. Fairtrade is not about charity – if producers are paid a fair price for their products, they don’t need charity.

We can help by buying Fairtrade goods, and you'll recognise them because they carry this Fairtrade mark. We can also help by encouraging retailers to stock Fairtrade goods which range from coffee to cotton products, from fresh fruit to beers and wines And not only do these products guarantee a fair price to their producers, they're high quality stuff too!

getting involved

Membership is open to anyone who shares our aims. We ask for a £10.00 annual donation for individuals and £20.00 for institutions like churches etc. This money goes entirely towards fulfilling our aims, covering costs like the production of a directory of Fairtrade outlets etc.

We meet formally on the First Tuesday evening of each month in Westborough Church ( Click here for a map locating the church) starting with coffee (Fairtrade coffee, of course!) at 7.00pm to discuss how we're getting on with our campaign, hear new ideas and answer any questions.

If you would like to help keep the Borough of Scarborough a Fairtrade Borough - and help to improve lives and prevent deaths in the developing world at the same time - please contact us for more information and for a membership application form.
