"Go bananas for Fairtrade!"

Hear directly about the impact of Fairtrade from Nioka Abbott-Balcombe, a member of the board of directors of WINFA (The Windward Islands Farmers Association), secretary of the Executive Committee of the SVGFTO (St Vincent & the Grenadines Fairtrade Organisation, a WINFA member), and Vice -chair of its Trading arm, WINFARM INVESTMENTS.

Nioka Abbott has been a banana farmer in St Vincent for 23 years. She was one of the first female farmers involved in shipping Fairtrade bananas from St Vincent and has been involved in Fairtrade for the last 10 years. Her farm covers 4.5 acres but because of disease she can now only grow bananas on 2.5 acres. Nioka is secretary of the St Vincent National Fairtrade Committee and chair of her local Fairtrade farmers' group.

The evening will begin with refreshments in the Crush Hall at 7.00pm, along with a stall and a display, then proceed to Nioka Abbott-Balcombe's audio-visual presentation starting at 7.30pm. This will be followed by a Question & Answer session.

Come and hear firsthand about how Fairtrade benefits producers, consumers and retailers alike!

Remember WORLD FAIRTRADE DAY
- Bang the drum!

BUT FIRST....

Fairtrade Fortnight 2010! The Big Swap!

We need to think of another good idea for Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 (February 22nd -March 7th) 'The Big Swap.' The Fairtrade Foundation Website states, "This year's Fairtrade Fortnight is going to be our most ambitious two weeks yet. We want one million and one people to join us in The Big Swap. We'll be asking the nation swap their usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff; their usual wine, sugar, or oranges for Fairtrade wine, sugar or oranges." Every swap will be proof that the UK wants developing world producers to get a better deal."

Any bright ideas gratefully received! and please start thinking what you and your organisation can do to mark FT Fortnight. To inspire you here are two short films from The Fairtrade Foundation: one for businesses, and one for consumers:

Our national award!

We were awarded £500 as national winners of the Most Imaginative Campaign for Fairtrade Fortnight 2009! with the schools poster competition.

In this picture by Moe Kafer, Ruth Fairchild, our treasurer, receives the award from (L to R) George Alagiah, BBC presenter and Fairtrade campaigner; Andrea Wilkinson of Shared Interest Foundation; and Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation, at the Fairtrade Supporter Conference in London on 10 October.

We were told,
'The judges were impressed with the original twist that you gave your poster competition and the way that you linked it to World Fair Trade Day later in the year. You got a huge number of young people involved through inviting them to participate in the competition and then displaying the posters in outlets for people to vote on. We thought this was a really clever idea and one that other groups would take inspiration from.'

Thank you to all who took part and contributed in any way to this event.

A campaign group by any other name...!

We want to affirm that we are working within a Borough context and to that end we have decided to change the name of the group from The Scarborough Fairtrade Action group to The Borough of Scarborough Fairtrade Group.

Please watch the website for updates and let us have your thoughts, comments and ideas.

Thank you for your continued support
